Fire & Smoke Damage Assessment and Soot Testing
Smoke and soot can migrate well beyond the area of visible fire damage. XRF Research performs fire and smoke damage assessments to help property owners, managers, insurers, and consultants understand where combustion residues may be present and what additional evaluation may be warranted.
These projects vary widely. A limited soot screening is different from a whole-building post-fire assessment, an insurance dispute, or an investigation involving sensitive occupants. We scope the work based on the property, fire history, cleanup status, and the purpose of the report.
When a Smoke or Soot Assessment May Be Needed
- Visible soot, char, odor, or smoke staining after a fire
- Smoke migration from a nearby unit, adjacent building, or wildfire event
- Post-cleanup verification after restoration work
- Insurance claim documentation or dispute support
- HVAC or attic concerns after smoke exposure
- Questions about whether affected materials should be cleaned, removed, or further evaluated
What We Can Evaluate
Depending on the scope, our assessment may include a visual survey, photographic documentation, surface sampling for soot or combustion byproducts, comparison sampling from less-affected areas, and review of cleanup or restoration conditions. Laboratory analysis may include soot/char characterization or chemical markers such as PAHs when appropriate.
Deliverables
Reports typically include the areas evaluated, sampling rationale, laboratory results, limitations, and practical recommendations. We avoid overstating conclusions beyond the data; smoke investigations are strongest when the sampling plan is tied to a clear question.
